The Incubator
The Incubator is a not-for-profit project by Hands on Artists that provides senior students and young artists the chance to gain experience exhibiting their artwork in a public art space.
Students from Brisbane and the Moreton Bay Region are invited to submit their work for display in our annual exhibition which celebrates the talented young creatives in our community. Prizes are awarded to those artists whose work shows skill, creativity and conceptual depth.
The main prize awarded by The Incubator is a residency at Substation Arts Space, with a solo exhibition at the conclusion of the residency.
REAP
The Ripple Effect Art Project began in 2018 and was established through the sponsorship of
an Access Art Achievement Award of $10,000 to Freya Toussaint.
Her proposal was to encourage a group of four disabled artists to come together to socialise
and work on developing their professional artist practice. They continue to meet weekly at the
Substation. Each artist chooses their own mentor and works on their own visual practice,
themes and goals to develop their micro business in greeting card sales and art.
The group is still going strong and two of the original four artists Freya Toussaint and Matthew
Henry still meet regularly. New artists are welcome to put forward an EOI to be considered to
join the collective.
REAP has held four exhibitions and has had work purchased by the
Queensland Children’s Hospital facility Jacaranda Place in Brisbane.
The collective work independently and support each other to make art. They chose to work
inside the framework of the Substation Arts Project to encourage a different example of disability
arts. They are included as part of a mainstream arts organisation and NOT a disabled arts
activity. They are artists first and they just happen to experience the world differently.
